>Oh Steve... always trying to screw your customers...i have 3GS, >and i still feel ashamed having supported you...

What a bunch of whiners. Don't buy something to "support" a company, buy it because it has the price and features you like. I have a 3GS and am tickled pink that for no extra money my phone has been improved. Had they not done this, I wouldnt have complained, since the phone didn't have those features when I bought it.

Seriously, you nerds need to get a life and stop acting like a big company is supposed to care about your pissy expectations.

[citation][nom]sceen311[/nom]Knew my iPhone didn't have multitasking when I got it. No one ever promised it would get it, so I still don't care today.Don't see how people could get upset about not getting something they were never promised to get.[/citation]

They're made since their shiny turd got replaced with an even shinier turd with capability's the old turd can't have.

The Iphone 3g became horrible slow with the iphone 3 os update and now with ios4 it feels probably another 20% slower. I really think its more of a processor and ram issue.
I do have a hard time understanding why it couldn't have gotten access to the wallpaper feature. But the iphone 3g had outdated hardware in it when it when on sale. Most users should be able to get an iphone 4 when they can fine one or jump android in the nearby future.

[citation][nom]tokenz[/nom]Um no they are all about the dollar bill. Which is why no multitasking on the 3g. You have to buy a 4g for that privilege.[/citation]

You have no idea what you are talking about. The iPhone 3G has only 128 MB of ram, and runs slow as hell as is. Think of a laptop with a Celeron processor, 512MB of ram, and Windows Vista Basic. The iPhone 3G run that slow.
The put 512 MB of ram in the iPhone 4, and the 3GS has 256 MB of ram. I could see these two getting the cool extra features, but the 3G is pretty much taxed to the max as is.

I'm almost sure most iPhone purchases weren't made by technically suave people. People often don't know what they want until they want it. HTC phone user, hey I can multitask, iPhone user what is multitasking?, well its the practice or capability of handling more than one task at the same time, wow can my iPhone do that?, Alas it cannot, can I get it?, alas you cannot unless you have a 3GS or greater.

After extensive testing on my own, I've figured out that there IS a real reason for skipping wallpaper. I have an iPod Touch G2 (that I connect to my ThinkPad, before you get the idea I'm an Apple nut) and with the update to OS 4, performance is certainly very acceptable. However, as noted, it lacks the wallpaper and multitasking capabilities. So, I used RedSn0w to JB and get those features. The end result is that, although performance is just fine most of the time, there's a severe lag when I open an app folder on the home screen. The iPod pauses for a moment, and the frame rate is somewhat low for the duration of the folder-opening animation.

When on a plain back wallpaper, this isn't the case. I suspect that this may have to do with rendering transparency for the icons that are not in the folder opened (since the transparency for a black background only involves darkening and reducing saturation).

I'm not an Apple supporter but now some people are getting stupid. iOS 4 is for the new devices. iPhone is the most unique of all phones because it has such a long compatibility between models. If you take another phone from another manufacturer you can't share applications between old and new models you don't get that long support.
And I don't get what is the big deal: when you bought the iPhone 3G it lacked these features. You haven't bought it because Jobs has told you that in 3 years you'll get them.
BTW why don't you try to run Windows 7 on 5 years old PC 😀
As usual new OS means new hardware.

[citation][nom]godwhomismike[/nom]As a 3G user, I think multitasking would have made this phone unusable. You have to remember, the 3G has half of the memory that your 3GS has, and it pretty much runs at half the speed. I find the 3G to be way too slow at times, and there is sometimes noticeable wait for some things to load or respond. I definitely see why multitasking or whatever other features were not added to the 3G. After going to iOS4, it's slightly slower than it was before, it's less responsive, and in my opinion, a bit too slow all the time now. Any thing else added to this thing would have sunk it like the Titanic. It's definitely at its limit of what 128MB of ram can handle.[/citation]

We are making a game for 3G. It is slow. Too slow and has too small amount of memory. 😀 I feel like in 1998. We've get 40 Mb of RAM for everything graphics, sound, etc. 😀 And you want multitasking and wallpaper... no way!

[citation][nom]Zingam[/nom]BTW why don't you try to run Windows 7 on 5 years old PC As usual new OS means new hardware.[/citation]

My pc is 5 years old, a 1st generation AMD dual core, and it runs W7 just fine, in fact it runs better on W7 than it does on XP.

But this time (and for the 1st time) I´ll give it to Jobs, if it screws up greatly performance and is not possible to fix, than prevent from running whats slowing the system. Isn´t what any1 would do in their system? I like fast and smooth..

[citation][nom]Clintonio[/nom]I think it's honest, not exactly pathetic. I do think it's cheap though.[/citation]

If having a backround hurts performance, how is that a bad answer?

It was honest and completely true. It's not necessarily the background itself it is the new animations as well. It is sluggish. I have it on my 3G and the transition is quite choppy.

I completely agree with it, Apple is doing what was best for the hardware.

Its like people are getting pissed because they didn't get a copy of Crisis with their new 10" netbook.

[citation][nom]tethoma[/nom]If having a backround hurts performance, how is that a bad answer?[/citation]

It already has a background 0,0,0 for all pixels changing the background pic doesn't effect performance unless its animated.
Even the 2g handles wallpapers fine when jailbroken

I have to give Steve Jobs credit though, he actually answered the person's question... unlike a certain referee in a certain world cup game last week. =P

But seriously... I do not think that was a solid answer. Still... I am at least content that he answered it. The black BG has always looked fine after all. Although many people jailbreak their ipods just for the background. =)

[citation][nom]nforce4max[/nom]This is why I never buy any thing that is Apple. When it comes to any thing Micro$soft we're getting the shaft enough as it is but Apple takes it to far.[/citation]

My Iphone 3G is jailbroken, I have no problem having a wallpaper, and up to 3 programs running in background. But anymore than 3 programs will cause the phone to crash. (reset springboard)

[citation][nom]tethoma[/nom]If having a backround hurts performance, how is that a bad answer?[/citation]

Exactly, I'm not an apple fan by any means, but Jobs gave a direct and honest answer. Can't fault him there.

It's one of the very few things I actually admire about Jobs is that he does take some time to answer some e-mails from consumers. I wish others would take after him.

[citation][nom]Tmanishere[/nom]Apple has always been more about simplicity and user-friendliness rather than customization (i.e. Mac vs PC). When will people understand that? Just be happy about the competition bringing prices down.[/citation]
no apple is always about cutting down the cost to get the most profit out of the sheep. Just drop simple stuff you worked on no longer than a day and you got yourself more profit then you would if you have worked on that certain thing for a month
