surround sound doesnt work on tv but does on radio

my denon surround sound works on the radio setting but not on the tv

You need to list model of the TV and AVR, and also what connections you are using.
Also, what does the Denon display for the sound field it is using for FM and the TV?

1. Check the audio menu of the TV. It may be set to output in stereo PCM. Change it.
2. Most AV receivers will remember the surround setting for each input. After you switch to the input you connected the TV try different modes such as Dolby.
3. Not all programs will be in surround sound.
