Surround sound / Fire stick

I have a Sharp tv and a Sony sound system. I have just switched from cable to a Fire Stick and can’t get the surround sound to work.

It depends weather what you are watching is encoded with surround sound. Not everything is encoded this way. How have you got your surround sound system connected to the TV?

That’s what I need to know. I have a HDMI cable and my manual says to connect audio cables. I have done both.

Ive got a sharp tv & it won't pass surround sound from external sources via hdmi or by optical .
It does stereo pcm only.

If your sony surround aound system doesnt have hdmi inputs you are out of luck.

I had to buy a new hdmi arc switching home theatre reciever when I changed my tv from LG to the sharp (the LG had no/issue passing full dolby digital out via optical)

What model tv & surround sound system do ypu actually own ??
