surround sound problem

My rear audio port on my computer broke and when i switched to the front one i noticed that front right a rear right do not work is there a fix for this

also would a cheap external sound card work as a work around

edit: the the front one broke cause the end of my head set adapter broke of into it and the only way the front one works is if i set realtek to mute the rear when a audio device is plugged into the front

The adapter i bought was mono and i had not noticed i purchased it off amazon cause it was the cheapest
