You need to have a source that has surround sound information
in it, and you need a device that is able to decode the surround
sound format and route the various signal to the 6 different
amplifiers and speakers. If you do not have surround sound
information, then you will revert to a 2 channel stereo or 1
channel mono system. Some pre-amps, decoders, and receivers
have simulated surround sound and various DSP effects that
generate fake surround sound from non-surround sound inputs.
In this latter case, you will get sound from all 6 speakers.
