Paid online is a scam initially started by Microsoft then Sony and Nintendo gave into the greed. Remember how the latter two touted free online as a selling point and subsidized the costs of servers themselves? Nintendo isn't exactly known for having a good service either.

Don't feed any of their greed. Do not buy a subscription. If you want free online, get on PC.
