Why does this expensive paperweight even exist?What sensible long, heck medium term use could something like this have? Once you get pass the "Ohh I can take Thermal selfies"( or you realize how many other persons bought this silly thing and have flooded your instagram with the same thing and don't feel all that special anymore) it might(emphasis on might) dawn on you that this was a complete waste of time and money.

Even if you aren't impressed by the current practical applications for it, you have to at least recognize what a big step this is in pure technology terms. Nobody is expecting this to become a standard among smartphones any time soon; you are correct in that very few people would have an actual use for it, but that doesn't mean it won't be used and it isn't as if selfies are the only thing you can do with it. Thermal imaging technology (in general) has very little use to the average consumer, but it's still used in many professional avenues.
