I have a Gateway laptop, and its input is 19V 3.42A. Its original AC adapter recently stopped working. So I bought a Targus 90W power adapter to replace the original adapter. It has a rating of 15-24V and 90W max, which I thought would work fine with my laptop. Well tt worked for about 5 hours. Then the DC jack started to have smoke coming out of it, and the laptop stopped charging. :fou:

My question is did my new AC adapter cause the problem? Or is it just a coincidence and my DC jack just went back on its own.

Thank you very much.

Likely the adapter. That's what you changed, and that's when the problem occurred. I'd suspect the jack if the notebook stays plugged in for a long time.
