Television not working as second monitor

I have an HP laptop with NVidia graphics card. Computer has an HDMI output. I plugged an HDMI cord into laptop and into TV.

And that's all you did? One of your F1-F12 keys should have a picture of 2 monitors on it. Holding down the Fn key while pressing said key should cycle the laptop between internal monitor, external monitor (tv), and both, with repeated pressings. You also have to make sure that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input (the one the laptop is connected to).
