Anyone know how to obtain a pair of each? I want to try the upgrade to
the Alesis 3630.

Please don't trash me for admitting to wanting to try to make this piece
perform better. I have my reasons. I posted over at another live audio
newsgroup and have had all the unsolicited, self-important opinions I
can stand for a while, thanks.

Call THAT. I don't think they'll sell the things retail, and I know
Digi-Key won't, but I bet that THAT will have a retail outfit listed on
their web site.

Let me know how it goes. I tried to work on the thing and gave up, but
that doesn't mean you should. Your first job, though, is to get clean
power supply rails everywhere, and that was a big stumbling block. There
is not anywhere near enough decoupling in there.

Like Scott suggests, talk to THAT, but also check with the DIY bunch at
http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/ Check out the "BlackMarket" section.
There have been folks selling these vcas and there is a wealth of mod and
upgrade info.

I'd be curious what changes you make.

I modified an Audio Logic MT66. I found most of the issues to be in
the control signal filtering, it had two poles of filtering adding too
much delay so there were bad overshoots in the volumne control (not
overshoots in the audio response).

The trick is to use single pole filtering in the contol voltage
filter. Any substantial second pole and the control voltage will
overshoot at the leading edge of step volumne increases at the input,
otherwise know as pumping.

The link above will help out. For those interested in dealing with THAT
directly, the minimum order is 25 pieces. Here's some further information
from their sales department:

Thanks for your interest in THAT Corporation's products.

Please note, however, that our minimum order quantity is one tube of parts.

Below, I've constructed a table which indicates our part number, minimum
order quantity (MOQ), along with pricing for less than 100 pieces for each
part you are interested in. (The next price break is at 100 pieces). All
prices are shown in US DOLLARS.

Part MOQ Price
2150A 25 $4.20 each
2180LA 25 $7.44
2180LB 25 $4.60
2180LC 25 $3.84
2181LA 25 $7.32
2181LB 25 $4.48
2181LC 25 $3.72

Although we are the sole distributor for our own products within the USA,
I've heard there are other smaller (unauthorized) companies who may carry
some of our parts. The names of these companies are unknown to me, but
you may be able to find some information by searching the web.

If you would like to place an order for one tube of parts, please feel
free to contact me to place your order, and to inquire about current lead
times. We do accept Mastercard and Visa, and would simply require the
cardholder name, number and expiration date. If you would feel more
secure faxing your order to me with credit card information, please use
the number shown at the bottom.

We also will ship your order COD via UPS. Please note there is an
additional charge by UPS to use this service of $7.00.

I think it is on the back burner if it has not been shelved.

I will rag on them at the AES show about it again, but at this point
Burr-Brown now has an SSM2017 replacement, so their motivation to get
this thing out the door is that much smaller.

Scott,
Do you know the replacement part number? Also, do you know if it's
supposed to be much of an improvement over the original SSM2017? The
reason I ask is because I have a dead dbx 760-x mic preamp that I
bought for next to nothing just to see if I could fix it. However I
read an old post by Monte McGuire where he was saying it was an
inferior component when compared to the chip used in the Symetrix
SX-202. Do you think the newer version of the SSM2017 is worth trying
if I'm already planning on working on my 760-x? Thank you in advance
for any suggestions.

From looking at the datasheet it seems that the INA-163 is only
available in a small outline package.

I just found the INA217 in a DIP 8 which looks to be the same as the
163 at first glance.

Hi,
I just bought an Audio Logic MT 66 Compressor myself, and after sending the money I read how it must be the worst 19" rack compressor ever marketed. I wonder how exactly you did the mods?
I know from modding my Studio Projects VTB-1 micpreamp that a lot can me done to improve crappy gear.

I am no expert so use lots of details. =)

Best Regards,
Joni
