the laptop acknoledges theres a tv connected via HDMI but the tv wont display the connection

to cut a long story short i have my laptop connected to the tv and although the laptop knows that the tv is connected when i try to use that tv as a second moniter nothing comes up and i have checked all of the connections so i know i have the right HDMI port but the tv never shows whats on the laptop

Did you clone or extend the desktop?
If you are trying to watch a movie or some protected content, you may need to close the laptop lid for video to switch over.

Yes, but it has worked , it was working , then my computer said there was a problem and shut down . When it came back on the picture was no longer on the tv

Ok, This is new and pertinant info.
Have either of you tried a new cable?
I've had 3 cheap ones die one me. Beats me how a cable that just sits there, never even disconnected, dies. LoL
