The most suitable OS for Acer Aspire 5310

Another 'gift' and I was wondering what the best OS for this old laptop might be.
Preferably a Windows, so I can give it away to the kids next door or somthing.
It came with Vista Basic, but it's running terribly right now so I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 but I'm not sure which version suits best. Or maybe even XP?
I don't know and I'm happy to find out what you guys/girls are thinking.

with that 1GB ram i would go for XP. If you are able to put on 1GB more win7 should run alot better
