Thinkpads compared to my desktop

Thinking about buying a t series IMB laptop in the 1-2 GHZ range with
dvd-rom drive. How much of a performance lag in terms of speed and
stability can I expect compared to a desktop with similar processor and
memory (256-512K)? I now have a compuke and it is a dog on speed and
stability. Thanks for any useful comparisons. Will be running linux and
win2000 in dual boot configuration.

With the processor speeds you're describing, the answer is largely
contingent on the speed of the hard-drive you select. If you opt for 7200
rpm, you might not notice any disparity between your desktop and laptop
machines; and your laptop may actually be faster, depending on what kind of
desktop machine you're using.

You'd have to compare the video adapters and the speed of the harddrives. IBM has its own drivers for some hardware built into the Thinkpad (which might increase stability). Otherwise, there should be no difference.

The biggest laptop performance bottleneck is usually the HD. Just make sure
to get a speedy one, such as a 7200rpm. 1gig of ram won't hurt either. That
coupled with a fast pentium M processor will make for one very fast laptop.

If you're asking what the comparison is between a PentiumM 2.0 T42 or T43
and a Pentium 4 2GHz desktop, the T42 is closer to a P4 4GHz in performance
and will smoke that old desktop!

2Ghz Pentium-M laptops can be compared to a 3Ghz Pentium 4 desktop CPU
in terms of general overall performance.

Easy way to understand is to look at the general WorldBench 5 rating at
www.pcworld.com for desktops and laptops.

(not 100% accurate, but gives you a decent idea how fast X is vs. Y.)
