Hi.I have just bought a Thorton core XP2000+ to put in my parents' machine.I have read that you can potentially unlock the extra 256K L2 by just closing the second L2 bridge.Has anyone had any success with this? How likely is it that it will work? Are there any risks in attempting it?
On another note, how overclockable are Thorton core AXP's, compared to tbred b's?Should it be able to reach 200MHz FSB?

no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]

I *think* they're supposed to OC a little better than the T-breds. The problem is, they're multiplier locked, IIRC. 12.5 x 200 = 2500MHz. I have my doubts on it reaching that speed without lots of cooling and a heafty voltage increase.

Dammit!Really? That could be a bit of an arse.I'll have a search on that.Anyone else know if that's true and if there is a way to unlock them?

Athlon/Durons are all now superlocked and the L2 bridge trick has been eliminated so no more releasing the extra cache :frown: .

However, the L5 bridges are still available. This means that supposedly you can change the 3rd (I think it's the 3rd) L5 bridge and turn the processor into a mobile XP. The multiplier can then be software controlled up to 16X.

This doesn't have much value to overclocking unless you can also control FSB through software. You can do that with VIA chipsets and SIS chipsets using 3rd party software (similar SetFSB) but I'm not sure about nForce2 chipsets. Supposedly the nVidia System Utility can do this but it is only fully supported on a handful of motherboards. Apparently, something must be implemented on the motherboard and in the BIOS for the overclocking functions to work.

Somebody here posted a link for the XP to mobile XP mod but I don't recall the complete URL. The post or article is somewhere at http://www.ocworkbench.com

Nrrrrf!I suppose i'll just have to wait until i get the chip (it hasn't arrived yet) and see if i'm lucky enough to have got an older one.I have read posts by people who managed to get thortons with unlocked multipliers and/or the ability to unlock the extra cache.Fingers crossed!

Enabling the disabled cahce in Thorton is not a good idea. The disabled cache may be faulty and make the CPU unstable if enabled

then you just disable it again...

No sense of adventure huh...

I have heard about the mobile multiplier trick, but i dont follow why you said you need a software overclocking software

From what i know, proccessors are clocked depending on their quality, right? The T'breds may start at 1700, but they go up to 2400, and arent all of them just slower clocked same chips? There is a reason it is lower clocked - like gfx chips, those which are faulty at high speeds are underclocked to make them a 5200 or whatever.

I say dont touch the loced stuff - its like that for a reason!

Enabling the extra cache requires physical mod. It's not so easy to disable it again.

Mobile Athlons are able to change speed (for energy savings or heat reasons) by dynamically changing the multiplier. Special software is needed to do this.

Desktop XPs are "superlocked". The XP to mobile XP mod does not get around the locked multiplier at POST time, rather it just allows you to change the multiplier after Windows loads.

For example, say you have a Barton XP2500+. The multiplier is permanently locked at 11X, at least at POST time. Nothing you can do about it. However with an XP mod'd to a mobile XP you can use the special software to change the multiplier after Windows loads.

Now let's say your motherboard or memory, maxes out at 200 Mhz. At 11x your max overclock would normally be 11 x 2000 or 2200 Mhz. However, with dynamic multipliers can gradually change the multiplier and improve your overclock.

Another example. Say it's your Barton that maxes out at 2200 Mhz but your motherboard can hand a higher FSB. Using that special mobile software you lower the multiplier and then use software like SetFSB to increase FSB and obtain the result you want.

Awkward, but it's now the only option for these new XPs
