Hi!

my Toshiba Laptop can't boot in safe mode, can't boot regularly, cant get into windows. after the toshiba logo at the start, it just leads to a black screen with a flashing cursor. someone please help me.

laptop is a toshiba m305-s4910

OS: windows vista home premium

Tried the hardware recovery thing, which is: press and hold 0, then press the power button, then tap 0 when Toshiba logo starts. That does not work.

Tried pressing F8 to enter safe mode, that does not work either.

both of these things that i tried just leads to a black screen with a " _ " line that flashes at the upper left corner of the screen.
and when i press a button it "beeps" annoyingly.

what do i do know?

thanks in advance!

Microsoft provides a set of tools for diagnosing and repairing Windows, which is called the Windows Recovery Environment, also known as Windows RE. Toshiba provides Windows RE on all computers sold with Windows Vista. It is stored in a special partition, usually 1.46GB in size.

Follow these steps to access the Windows Recovery Environment:

1. Turn the computer on, and immediately press and hold the F8 key.

2. After several seconds, the Advanced Boot Options screen will appear.

3. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight Repair Your Computer, then press the Enter key.

4. Accept or change the language and keyboard selections, then click Next.

5. Use the mouse and keyboard to select your Windows user name from the drop-down list, and enter your Windows password, then click OK.

6. The System Recovery Options menu will appear. It will include several Windows Recovery Environment options, typically including the following:

* Startup Repair
* System Restore
* Windows Complete PC Restore
* Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
* Command Prompt
* Toshiba Recovery Wizard

The Toshiba Recovery Wizard option is not part of the Windows Recovery Environment. Select it only if you wish to restore the computer's original factory software 'image' -- including Windows and applications. This procedure first erases all existing programs, documents, and other data on the hard disk drive.

I have this exact same problem.

I am using a Toshiba laptop M505 S4940, running Windows Vista SP2
4GB RAM, Pentium Dual Core processor T4200, Intel GMA 4500M

I had it a little less than 2 years now and this is the first major problem.

Notable events within the last 2 days include:

1)My successful attempt to adjust the size of System Restore file (changed it from 30GB to 1GB using CMD)

2) Yesterday, My version of Spyware Doctor was strangely not working. The active protection was disabled, as well as other features. Within 10 minutes, the laptop randomly shut down on me during the middle of my work and internet surfing. The screen went blank (LED lights still on, power still on) So eventually I held the power button till it completely shut off. It rebooted fine. I performed disk cleanup with CCleaner, and a defrag with WinOptimizer.

3) Today during my internet streaming, I received Trojan warnings on my Vipre antivirus. Then, it cut off, saying that my 'trial' expired,(strangely I have a full version). 2 minutes later, the laptop shut down, the same as it did the day before. However this time it could not reboot.

The screen loads the Toshiba splash screen, only offering you the options F2(for BIOS) and F12(for boot sequence). After this, the screen goes black with a cursor. Nothing is available to load.... you cannot access System Restore, Safe Mode(F8) or anything else [the screen for this does not load]

I have entered the BIOS.. the system recognizes all drives

I have tried using my Windows 7 CD to perform a boot, however, even if i change the primary boot device to CD...the same screen comes up, saying
"CD-ROM Boot Priority.... Boot Ready"

You can't click anything... all you can do is press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart and face this torture again.

If ANYONE has found a solution..please respond!

hello i have found a solution after about two hours of working on this becuase it just happened to me. your going to have to get another windows 7 disk(illigle one if you want but your going to have to get a keygen activator which you can get anywhere on the internt for free) then put the disk in and hold F12 while its loading. click boot from disk and install it all again. click custom when it asks for it. when it ask for key click do later and it should start installing. when its done your old documents will be under old.Windows. so far this worked for me

I just ran into the same issue as the above guys. Using Windows Vista (not win7). Trying to find a solution. I even unplugged the hard drive and reconnected. IMO it seems like the software on the harddrive is missing the files to start anything to do with windows.

I've tried everything to get into windows and can not.

I created a boot disk/recovery cd for vista and it still won't boot.

I was doing some streaming video watching and all of a sudden my a/v (aviria i think) started going crazy - a program called ptm.exe was running a fake antivirus scan. I deleted ptm.exe and I was unable to access anything on the computer - it couldn't find a program to open (anything). I attempted a system restore but it wouldn't open that either. I shut off - booted into safemode - same issues, couldn't find anything to open the programs with.

Finally I restarted and ended up with the black screen after post with the blinking cursor in the top left.

Any help would be great - when holding down F8 from the time to computer powers up - it just annoying beeps.. no help

OK sounds like I am having the same problem with a Toshiba, with dual core Pentium running on Vista Basic.

Computer has not been used for some time. It was wife's and started having boot up problems. Finally bought a new one and now seeing if I can figure out something on this one, as I have needs for another laptop.

After several attempts finally got :

Startup Repair

Your computer was unable to start
Startup is checking for problems.

It then starts a long list of checks and test it preformed.

Finally one ....
Software installation log diagnsis
Results completed successfull. Error code = 0X0
Time taken = Oms
a blank line or row is next
----------------------------------------------------------
Root Cause Found
-----------------------------------------------------------
A patch is preventing the system from starting
a blank line
----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
session details
-----------------------------------------------------
System disk = \device\harddisk0
windows directory = c:Windows
autochk run = 0
number of root causes = 1

Can anyone make any sense out of this. I am not a techie.

you are gonna have to boot into recovery console, and run "fixmbr" and "fixboot" if this still doesnt solve your issue, then you need to boot to a windows cd reinstall the OS. do a clean install but leave the system file intact without doing a format, this way everything from you last install like my documents and such will all be in a windows.old file, so you will still have them. if you dont mind losing the files then go ahead and format it.

:pfff: Well :hello: , i m also struck with problem. My is Lenovo S-10 3 , well it's very nice and dependable laptop.

But as far as this problem is conserned, My laptop, starts, goes to boot and then stop. :cry:

*****what i would like to add other than up mentioned methods i have tried yet!! *****

As soon as i activate boot from hdd (on any position, in boot sequence) in the boot menu , everyother option become unbootable and end up with blank screen with blinking cursor; untill the next restart, where i have to go again in the boot menu and disable the hdd. :pt1cable:

But i can boot from ln, usb, external hdd or cd. Only condition i have to disable the Hdd in the boot menu.

infact it seem, the computer is not able to reach hdd as the led light of hdd didn't glow.

*fixing boot mbr. didn't resulted success. :eek:

*Installing new os. also didn't work. :eek:

*reseting cmos... well, i still working on it.

I am left 1 option to try, format everything and try, Format everything and male partitions a fresh and ten a clean install :non: .
