when switched on my laptop screen goes green from the top to the bottom, then there's nothing on the screen.

If the laptop is booting up connect an external monitor and press the function F5 key repeatedly to see you to determine if your laptop is functional, but the screen is not. If you get an image on the external monitor, but not the laptop screen then the backlight of the screen may have failed.
