So , i was given a laptop to have a look at as apparently there appeared to be malicious pop ups but after receiving the laptop i tried to turn it on but i got absolutely nothing.

I first thought that it was potentially the screen that is not working as the power button light was on and the keyboard num lock and caps lock lights flashed on (the off almost immediately). But then I started to think maybe it's a motherbooard issue as i tried to connect to an external display and got nothing out of that either. So the problem i face is that i don't know whether the laptop is booting and the display is dead or whether the laptop jut isn't booting at all. I have done the whole remove the battery and hold the power button stuff but had no luck with that.

Any thoughts or tips?

No internal or external picture means the laptop probably isn't POSTing. You either have a faulty component preventing the system from booting, Windows 10 Fast Startup (if Win 10 is installed), or, as you speculated, a bad board.
