I bought a NEC 2430CD with a non-functional touchpad.
I loaded the NEC drivers, but the device manager sez
it's not working or wrong drivers. win98SE

Took it apart. The ribbon is good, got continuity on all
contacts from socket to socket.
There's no mention of the pointing device in the bios.
Got the latest bios upgrade. External mouse works fine.

The way this thing is put together with the processor heat
sink and heat pipe, I can't get at any of the connections while
it's running.

Are there any common faults I should be looking at?
Diagnostic tools that can give me a clue? Can I peek/poke the port
and tell anything?
Thanks,
mike

AIUI those touchpads are no for repair.
Why not just use an external mouse?

ANYTHING can be repaired. Feasibility is another question.

There's a new wrinkle. When the laptop is cold, the touchpad works fine.
After about a minute, it goes crazy and starts opening windows all over
the place. Reboot and it's dead...not recognized by the system.

Would be interesting to determine if the problem is in the touchpad module
or on the motherboard. Touchpad module I'd try to repair/replace.
Motherboard ain't worth the trouble/risk.

Are the signals from the mouse module the same as the ones that would
come in the external PS/2 port? If so, I could remove the touchpad
module and diagnose it externally.

Because the laptop has a built-in touchpad.
It's convenient.
It doesn't require another thing to carry along and plug in.
It doesn't have a connector hanging out the back to break when you bump
something...or a wire to catch on that doorknob and drag your laptop to
the ground.
I LIKE the touchpad.
Resale value is much better.
Shall I go on???
