Trace lost computer

Hello,
my computer was stolen a few days ago. how do is it possible to trace it using the serial number if the the thief uses it online? when formatted, is this information lost?

It's lost. There's no way to track it unless you installed tracking software on it. The best thing you can do it report it to the police.
