I have a 5040 which appears to have a dead output. So far I have not
been able to bring that part back to life so my TV is receiving no signal
from it from either of two output sources. It appears to be fully
functional otherwise, and appears to reboot, re sync after a reboot and to
record programs as programmed before this happened.

I am considering buying a factory referb and swapping the hard drives.
I hope to keep the same service activation and all the shows that are not
sitting on the old hard drive.

Does anyone know if this will work. Of do you have any other
suggestions.

The activation is by a serial number that is embedded in a ROM chip on the
motherboard.

That brings up an interesting question. How does Mikey swap out a bad system
board?

All showstopper were sold with activation, It does not make any difference
what the serial number is.
