Trouble Playing .voc files on mac laptop?

So my cousin came to visit us this week, and he has a mac laptop. While with us, he bought a voice recorder from radioshack (i can't seem to find the product number). So the device makes .voc files, and the software that came with it only works with windows. So on the back of the device, it says to drag the files onto a mac in order to play them. But when he does this, quicktime doesnt recognize .voc files and wont play them. So i had him install VLC on his mac to see if VLC could play .voc files, but it cant either. Is there any player that can play .voc files on a mac? If not, is there a converter that could change .voc files into something a mac could use like an .mp3? Thanks in advance

See if there are different options to record files. I had the same with an RCA recorder that I had recently purchased. I have not found a program to convert the files, but I have found that a HQ (high quality) option allows the files to be saved as .wav and that is readable by quicktime/itunes on a mac!

I went there, uploaded the .voc file, watched it upload and then ... nothing. Tried again, same lack of result. Am i doing something wrong?

Thank you for posting this. However, when I uploaded the VOC file and it came back as an mp3 file, my iTunes still would not play it or recognize it.

Any further insight would be greatly appreciated.

I had similar frustrations. Try this;

Open the file in a text editor in binary mode. There will be a source signature in the first few bytes, something like RP5120_VOC_file. Googling RP5120 for me located http/www.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads/?sku=RP5120 where I finally found a program that opened it, played it and would export as a .wav.

VOC files from RCA digital voice recorder will not play in Windows Media Player, iTunes, QuickTime, or any other media software you probably already have.

Luckily, the VOC to MP3 converter can convert RCA VOC files into mp3s which can be emailed, burned on a CD, or listened to with common media player software.

Yes, you can convert the .voc to a .wav file in the RCA Digital Manager, but why bother with having this app on your computer and having to go through the hassle of converting each file every time you want to play one on your computer? I found a simple solution in the RCA manual. Press info/menu and hold for 2 seconds to get into the menu. Press info/menu repeatedly until the recording quality menu appears. (LP, SP, or HQ). Press |<<</>>>| until you see the selection "HQ." Now all your files will be recorded in .wav format forever unless you change the quality setting back again.
