Trouble with sound Xbox 360 hooked up to projector

I have a Xbox 360 hooked up to a projector using a hdmi cable. There are no build in speakers on the projector. How would I get sound. I have tried using external speakers plugged in through the projector audio out but no luck

Which version of the xbox 360 do you have?

You can use an HDMI audio extractor to provide an audio output.

This will be a fixed level output so you will control the volume with what ever you use for sound.
