Tunnel Sound from Speakers

I have a PC running windows 7 that is connected through a Sony receiver to my 5.1 setup. I recently installed an Nvidia GTX 760, and I'm outputting all audio through the card's hdmi out. I have configured my sound for 5.1 through windows, and all speakers are recognized. I have disabled all enhancements and have ensured that all recording is disabled.

My problem is that most audio played on my PC sounds as though it's being played in a tunnel or well. Something is clearly amiss. MP3's played through windows media player, vlc, and media player classic never make use of the subwoofer. Youtube videos played through Google Chrome also do not, but the same played through Internet Explorer do, though the tunnel sound is still there. I should note that windows system sounds demonstrate the same effect. Bluray discs played through Powerdvd seem to sound normal, and definitely make use of all channels.

This problem only started after the installation of the new graphics card. I never had similar issues with my old Radeon HD 6850. Also, audio is 100% normal through my other two inputs--namely my PS3 and cable box.

I am entirely at a loss, but perhaps someone here can guide me in the right direction.

Thanks to all in advance.

To give you a better answer, I would need to know your motherboard model. Like ssddx, I would look for the motherboard's onboard audio chipset, find the software, and disable any post-processing or equalizer settings. At best, set everything back to default if you have never messed with the software before.
