Touchpad turn on or off on Acer laptop

Should be an option in the BIOS or in mouse properties in Windows. There may also be a hotkey on the keyboard, usually Fn + some key combination.

Thanks for the tip FN + 7 does it

Thanks to mbconnell I was able to help my sister-in-law stop her mouse from moving while she typed, but the combination that worked was actually FN-F7, not FN-7.
