If the test is successful, let us hope the Chinese will be using consumer grade GPS devices inside their long-range missiles.

[sarcasm] Any guesses, how many gps addicted morrons will fly of the radar when the arrow disapears/change direction?[/sarcasm]

Pretty much averything uses gps nowadays, can they willfully disrupt the signal as they wishes?

Looks like an Indication of what might be about to happen during this period........well, as always, we fear the most and if something was to happen(God Forbid) they're going to blame the whole thing on this series of experiments....

maybe US wants to test failover by knocking down their OWN satellite. There's a serious wireless network up there.

Im betting on them testing a system to knock out GPS signal so they can see what happens to JDAMs and other GPS guided munitions, could be very useful for anti guided missile systems.

Anyone who complains that they are knocking out the GPS signal, the US DOD put up the star of GPS satellites, they can do what they want to them. The star is going to be falling out of position in a few years anyway and need replacement so this might be a good check to see what happens when GPS stops working.

Um, is this article simply stating GPS will be unavailable at those altitudes? This whole thing seems to be aimed at pilots, not daily GPS users like civilians in automobiles. Besides, despite the fact that DOD owns the GPS satellite network, I doubt they want to knock out 50 million users in huge metropolitan areas within that signal radius. They could run a ground level test like this in the desert or middle of the ocean or wherever.

Yes they can. The GPS system was created by the Department of Defense (Military). They simply "allow" civilians to use it. They can turn it off whenever they want, as they want.

Unless technology has changed in the past few years, loss of GPS signal lock will also take down CDMA wireless base stations (the big central switches sitting at the cellular service providers...) If GPS is down you will have trouble with your Verizon or Sprint CDMA phones during this time.

As for commercial pilots relying on GPS for their daily flights... good luck with that! So what, if some civilian planes crash? Happened before! We can always blame the weather...
