Hello everyone. I will be purchasing a new laptop when I return from Africa in 2-3 weeks. I appreciate any and all suggestions. I am calling it an ultrabook, but it can be a little thicker or heaver if meets my needs.
1) What is your budget?
2-3 thousand usd if necessary
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
United States
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
No preference
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
Not unless the warranty is the same
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
This is for basic on the go things like microsoft office, web browsing, and movies. I do want to note that I am still tossing around the idea of building an egpu setup to accompany it. For this reason I would prefer one with an available PC slot if I am saying that correctly. The mac thunderbolt is also enticing, but I do not fully understand if it can handle a beefy egpu like say the gtx 580.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
I would like a thin and light easily portable laptop to take to class and around, with the ability to hook it up to an egpu and my big hd tv at home. I know I could get a great Sager gaming laptop, but they are too bulky. Hopefully, there are options for someone like me who wants the best of both worlds
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
No gaming while its portable, but yes at home. Ideally I'd like to run Crysis and others on high with the 580 connected.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
At least 4, but the more the better.
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
I trust the online community and do not need to see it first.
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
No preference
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. Click here for Screen resolution information.
900p is preferred, but if I will accept 1366x768 if the screen is high quality and most of my other criteria are met.
13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?
No preference
Build Quality and Design
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Sadly yes, but I have seen many that I like. This will not be a deal breaker.
15) When are you buying this laptop?
Ideally 2-3 weeks. Sooner if there are deals or even willing to wait if the new ultrabooks set to come out are a better alternative.
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
At least 2 years
Notebook Components
17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
SSD would be great, but not necessary. 128 or 256 should be enough
18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
No need for an optical drive. I would only want one if it could be swapped for another battery
Thank you in advance for any insights. And here's a totally unrelated side note for anyone still reading. Conditions in Africa are unimaginably dismal. Anyone who can help or wants more information, PM me.
