Unlock ? you might mean Overclock. For Overclocking your GPU you start to bump up Core, Memor, Shader clocks by low value (50 MHz) then you test your OC stability (play games and make load on GPU) if no problems happen (crashes, freezes, BSODs) then you're fine and you can bump those a little bit higher. Repeat it many times until you reach the limits of your OC (until you crash or you get BSOD)

Note 1: Check temperatures after each OC you do.
Note 2: Don't mess up with voltages.
Note 3: Download MSI Afterburner to OC your GPU.

thanks, i was hoping for a unlock path but i would like to overclock if not,
i have gigabyte gtx560ti at 900mhz but would like to take it higher,
do you think the cooler that came on it would do for the job,
i have heard it can help if you remove the heatsink and apply better thermal paste this can help,
also i heard if you clean of old paste and sand copper plate with very fine sand paper as well this helps what do you think thanks

The stock HSF (heatsink fan) should be fine with OCing as long as the rest of your rig has good clean airflow and you have a quality PSU (power supply). What are the specs for the rest of your system?

Link your GPU. Yes you can overclock it further, some guys reaching 1 GHz stable OC for their 560Tis but i guess this will heat up the GPU in load times.

Applying the thermal paste reduces heat by 4-5 degrees, not too much benefit.

You cannot unlock a 5850 to a 5870 either. The shaders are hard locked. All you can do is raise the core/mem frequency with a 5870 bios.

You sir, are correct. I should have said HD6850 to HD6870. Regardless, I NEVER advocate unlocking CPUs nor GPUs. There is a reason they were coded to be the model they are. Unlocking a feature (that failed to meet a test) is a good way to "break" you system.

You should be fine as is the with stock HSF on your GPU.

^That's almost always true. In rare cases like the early GTX 465s they simply disabled shaders and ram chips through bios because they needed a mid range part and hadn't finished the 460s. The 560ti is a fully enabled chip though, there is nothing left to unlock. The regular 560 could possibly be unlocked into a 560ti, but like you said there is probably a reason the chips were binned for the 560's.
