UNSAFE Apps: How to know which apps are safe?

Hi guys, I need advice from the I.T experts here!

I've been wracking my brains, but I can't figure this out so TomsHardware was the first place I thought I should ask for help.

I just want to a step by step process for how I can tell which apps are safe and which aren't...

I'd begin by looking at reviews from legit sites: PC World, PC Mag, CNET, etc

Google is your friend here. Handy to investigate whether an app is legitimate or not. Always try to download apps from the creator rather than third party sites. They can be altered versions of the app or try to slide unwanted toolbars or other things into the installation.

ashampoo is a well known software

so as long as you download from their website its fine

if unsure about a software/app simply google "name of software/app" is it safe/dodgy etc

Thanks, but is there a specific process I can do myself to ensure the app is safe?

I always try to use the Microsoft Store, but it still doesn't have that many apps so I need to use developer websites to download apps....

You can always run a scan on the download before installing, or run it on a VM.

Using a VM sounds like a great idea. Is it possible to use a VM for free?

yes virtualbox is a good free software to run virtual machines
