I have an MSI gaming laptop with a 4th generation i7 4710hq processor and a gtx 970m graphics card; in terms of future proofing and whatever else, is an upgrade from a 970m to a 980m worth it? (to clarify, I am in the market for a new laptop with a 980m and was thinking of getting the acer predator 17) (also, money is not an issue (not to sound pretentious)). Thank you kindly

That is a tricky one; yes you will see an increase in FPS, but not really enough to warrant an upgrade. Here check this out:

I would highly advise going for a laptop using a standard GTX980; or failing that a gtx970m sli or even gtx980m sli laptop; simply put if money isnt an issue theres no point in 970m-->980m :)

I would not really bother. if money is not an issue, I would stick with the 970 and then buy whatever pascal or Polaris stuff comes out. money wise, you would get a better boost. at 1080p, the 980 is not going to appear drastically better, and thus that just leaves 1440p, which some might argue a 980m is not enough. thus, waiting for say the 1080m ( or whatever it will be called) would hopefully mean rock solid 1440p and perhaps even some 4K. That is my view at least.
