Is it possible to upgrade the gpu on my 2012 15in. unibody macbook pro to say like a 6 core or 8 core gpu?

most gpu on laptop is soldered to MB and is compact sized, no gpu upgrade is possible AFAIK.

Yep, one thing you can do is to use an Egpu through thunderbolt 3. For example:
