usb not working

Why am I not getting access to my computer when usb cord is inserted. There is no indication that it is plugged into the computer

computer, cable, or device.
with device manager on your screen, plug in the device and see if it shows up but maybe needs a driver.

Try the device in one of the rear usb2 ports

Try another device in the same USB port to make sure its not the port.
If no usb devices are working you have other problems.

Try another cable or another device the will work with on the cable you have. They don't last forever, the constant flexing breaks them eventually.

Does it work on another pc?
