I ahve had this problem ever since I did something stupid during a test to see whether my system qualifies for Windows XP. I unplugged a USB camera whilst the system was checking. Now everytime I unplug a device in Windows, it gives me a fatal error message and then it hangs. I think I have done something to my USB drivers. How can I rectify this problem so I can plug and unplug devices without having to restart my computer?

Thank you for your help

RightClick on Desktop/properties/desktop/customizedesktop, and make sure that mycomputer is checked. (note it cant be a shortcut to mycomputer, has to be the one i just said above)Right click mycomputer/properties/hardware/devicemanager, scroll to the bottom you should see "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" if you see that under a category named Unknown Device or Other Device that means that you uninstalled your drivers. Just simply re-install them. If not im hoping to tell you that you can un-install then install drivers. If that doesn't work that only other advice that I can give you is reformat

I have tried your advice and the only items under Universal Serial Bus Controllers are:

Sis 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Sis 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

These are all reported to be working properly. If I had my Windows Me install CD then couldn't I just delete the aforementioned items, restart the PC and then reinstall them from the Windows Me CD?

no not delete, that just causes more conflicts. all you do is right click and uninstall. when you restart the computer it should say something about new hardare and you install it with the CD you just mentioned, you might also have a seperate CD that came with your computer that is labeled DRIVERS, and you will use that.

I dont have an Uninstall options in my Device Manager. I only have a Remove option. I don't have a separate CD labelled drivers I only have a Windows Me CD?

If I get a separate PCI card with USB ports will I be able to use their drivers for the onboard USB Drivers as well.
