Question USB tethering stopped working

I work from home thanks to COVID. Since I only have wifi (no cabled internet available here) I use my USB cable to tether my phone to my pc. Worked fine for weeks but today the option to tether my phone via usb is greyed out. I tried all the different ports on the computer but it won't work. I am unable to get a new cable at the moment as all the stores are closed and the delivery services have very late delivery times. Can anyone tell me if it's really the cable or could there be other fixes I can try first...

The hack with developer's USB debugging doesn't work. I also tried another cable I borrowed from a friend but alas no change.
