using spdif to connect tv to external speakers

my tv has horrible audio. looking for some way to improve the clarity of verbal audio. Live in an R
v so space is a premium. my tv has a SPDIF digital audio connection. can I use this connection to a set of external speakers to improve voice quality?

Sure, speakers with spdif input, as long as you need it for TV signal only, if Internet Widget, may need further investigation. through headphone jack(s), if available, always works.
