Vaio Touchpad drivers

I am having difficulties with my touchpad drivers on my Vaio PCG-F590.
There is supposed to be a touchpad driver for this Alps unit on the Sony
site which automatically installs drivers with an exclamation mark in the
Device manager. Even if installed in safe mode. And suspiciously it calls
this internal touchpad a USB HID device, which doesn't sound right. The
touch pad works with the internal windows PS2 drivers but it is so sensitive
that the cursor jumps all over the place in normal use while typing

I am using Windows XP Pro

There was a rumour of all these drivers being on some site called
http/db.rfi.de (which seems to have changed its address since it was last
mentioned on these boards).

Does anyone know how to get this Touchpad to work or access this German site
to download drivers for this computer please? I am also having some
difficulty with the keyboard: If you touch some keys accidentally it often
closes a window (losing all work you are doing) or opens one or jumps to
some esoteric function which is indicative of the drivers not being
installed properly. Sony is of course no help at all beyond condescending
to tell me that the Touchpad is an Alps on whose site there do not appear to
be drivers even if I COULD identify the model

There is an XP BIOS update - if this is not installed it well could be
the source of the problems. There is an XP compatible Alps driver on
this Sony support site also:

Well thanks for the update but that is the driver which installs with an
exclamation mark in Device Manager with error code 10, whatever that means??
And my BIOS seems to be R0116K1 which seems to be about as up to date as any
around/ i did down load a later hp driver for an Alps touchpad but it wont
let me taptoclick. And Alps refuses to cooperate when I tell them that Sony
drivers wont work properly

Hi -

Sony's support site lists Alps Touchpad Driver version 5.3.503 for your
computer.

I have uploaded version 5.3.510 to my personal web space. It should work on
your computer. The driver is a little more recent and is from a VAIO
V505EX, which also has an Alps Touchpad. I saved the files from Sony's
installer .exe file before they were deleted when I clean-installed Windows
XP Pro on my computer.

Before doing anything, take a manual System Restore Checkpoint (Start | All
Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore .. choose the option
to create a Manual Restore Point, click Next, give your restore point a name
and click Create). If this driver causes problems you can revert back to
where you are now simply by using System Restore.

Download the following file to your hard disk:
http/pages.sbcglobal.net/jefn/Alps5.3.510.9.zip

I suggest you download the file directly to your C:\ root drive, so that
these instructions will be simpler for me to type.

Once you have the file, go into Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E) and
extract the driver files. This is done simply by navigating to your C:\
drive and then double-click on the Alps5.3.510.9.zip file and then, in the
new Explorer window, click on File then Extract All. Click on Next then
Next then Finish. Close all three Explorer Windows you've opened up in this
process.

Go into Start | Control Panel (and, if using Category View, Performance and
Maintenance). Then double-click on the System Icon. Click on the Hardware
tab. Click on the Device Manager button. Expand the device tree by
pressing the plus-sign next to Mice and Other Pointing Devices. Right-click
on Alps Film Pointing-Device and click on Update Driver in the drop-down
menu.

Select the "No, not this time" radio button and click Next.

Select the "Install from a list at a specific location (advanced)" radio
button and click Next.

Select the "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." radio
button and click Next.

Click the "Have Disk" button. Browse to the C:\Alps5.3.510.9 folder you
created when you extracted the .zip file from my download. Click the Open
button. Click Next. The driver will install. Click Finish and reboot when
instructed.

Please reply to this message when you have downloaded the driver so that I
can remove it from my personal web space.

Many thanks for the message and I have downloaded the drivers (which I think
are the same as the hp ones I downloaded for the same touchpad in their
later computer): The touchpad now works properly and I will see over time if
it has cured the problem with the erratic working of the keyboard

Thanks again, the keyboard is now less erratic although it still, - very
occasionally, - closes a working window and loses all work if I accidentally
touch some key at the bottom of the keyboard (I havent discovered which one
is causing the problem)
