video editing questions need answers

ok here's the deal. i would like to copy some vhs tapes i have to video-cd. i have ati's tv wonder ve. it will only record in mpeg2.
questions:
1. how can i change the mp2 to 1? (what encoder and where can i find it)
2. i'v heard i can just burn as a super vcd, but will it take up more space on the disc?
3. if i do burn as a svcd will my dvd player read it?(not dvd-rom but actual home player)

Check compatability lists to see if your player can play vcd or svcd, also check if your dvd player can read cdr/rws. Some players can read store bought vcds but not home burned.
