I am 26 and i've had a lot of contact with violent games, porn , violent movies, literature , etc since early childhood...And you know what - i have a solid job, i am a good law respecting citizen and one of the reasons i don't go on a rampage is because when i am stressed i sit down, kick some ass in a game, and cool off.

So thank you game devs, because you improve my life significantly and help me become a better and more ballanced person with your art!

This comment section is a prime example of the central problem of this debate - one person says something stupid, and everyone escalates. Yes, Nader said a very, very, stupid thing. Why? Because he knew that it would rile up folks, similar to some of the people in this comment section, to come back "defending" video games while making ridiculous and equally stupid remarks. Really? Does anyone here at all think calling him a child molester back, or advocating determining who can and can't have children is going to make the video game defense look better? You can condemn Nader's comments, and defend the video game industry, without making gamers look bad with over-the-top and equally stupid comments. You may not think it matters, but these things get picked up and parroted, and if that happens enough it gets reused as attack against your own position. Aside from that, it doesn't help the discussion at all. There are a number of smart statements in this comment section, and others on this topic, even if I don't agree with them, but there are a number here that are truly bad, bad, disturbing, and stupid. This is a very important issue, that directly affects the lives of thousands a year. I don't want it to become just another example where intransigence of radicals on both sides prevent reasonable, thoughtful, solutions to a problem.

The supreme court ruled actual child molesters should have access to sites like facebook because they should be allowed to seek new prey. The fact that politicians call violent game makers child molesters is sick, they need to actually stop real child molesters from doing so before they start attacking people who are not.

"1% tax to violent video games"

I hope they will pay the video game developers their money lost since pirating will go up 100%.

Thank christ I live in Canada.

Well, even if game developers are somehow molesting children, what's it called when politicians molest everyone?

[citation][nom]razor512[/nom]The assault rifle is just a name to make certain guns seem scary but the actual internal firing hardware is exactly the same as whats found in your standard hunting rifle.[/citation]
I know and understand this, and it annoys me when reporters and pundits and politicians throw around the word "assault weapon" too. They should be singling out the features that actually make "assault weapons" more dangerous: magazine size should be restricted and semi-automatic long arms should not be legal, imo. There is no legitimate civilian use for which those two features are ever necessary.

Rifles are completely inappropriate for home (or even out of home) defense, and sport firing does not necessitate large magazines or higher rates of fire.

Ralph Nader is calling video game developers "virtual child molesters".

best way to shut this dumb - - -k up is to tell him everything that goes on in video games was also part of when the founding fathers did to make america, and with out those actions the queen of england would rule north america

There is thou. Hunting example would be pest control. Wild hogs are a nuisance that destroy farm and grazing land. Their numbers are increasing Rapidly especially in texas. Sometimes they can be in groups of 20 or bigger. A semi automatic rifle that has the power and magazine is ideal for taking out a large group. Which just can't be done with a single shot bolt action that you need to reload after 5 shots.

Granted... Not every citizen needs it. But this is just one example. There are purposes and reasons for both a larger clip and semi auto function outside of just sport and because I "want" one. Which IMO I think that the I "want" one is enough. Just needs to have solid background checks etc to obtain it. Again, my opinion. I don't expect everyone to have the same outlook.

Only issue is that large magazines are needed for handguns and they can easily be modified to handle more ammo. When hunting, a rifle is needed as it is the right gun for the job. While you can hunt with a handgun, the problem is that they are not accurate at long ranges, but those bullets can go a very long way. If you are going to shoot, you want to be sure the bullet hits what you are aiming at and not fly past the deer and hit the other person hunting a few hundred yards down.

Having the right gun for the situation is safest as you reduce the chance of the wrong thing getting hit.

The problem is that since full auto guns are banned, there is no difference between what the government considered an assault weapon and one that is not. If your goal is killing lots of people, then a hand gun will get pretty much the same results as a rifle (the recent elementary school sooting was done using a handgun)

hand guns are better for home defense than a rifle, but rifles and shotguns are more popular for home defense in most state because the licenses for them, and the requirements are much lower (eg not having to take an overprices class and pay thousands on top of the cost of the gun just to be able to legally have it)

The end result of the state laws is forcing more people to settle with the wrong gun for the job

In the states when lax control, the most common gun is the hand gun (the reason being if you are not using a gun for sport or hunting then there is almost no need for a rifle).

The issue is that you cant really ban assault rifles without banning all semi auto guns, as for the end result capability, they are all the same. People get the military looking rifles just for the look (just like how people put spinning rims on their car or other stupid stuff) the actual hardware in a $200 semi auto rifle, and in a $1500 military looking rifle are the same and what you are paying for if a little extra plastic and mounting plates

Smart people buy guns based on the function and hardware and not on the look.

Reloading in a non panicked situation is extremely fast, ( if someone with basic experience with a rifle or a handgun were to shoot 1 bullet per second, they could reload and probably add about a 0.5 second delay at the end of each clip as they reload.

But if you are completely panicked from being under attack, you will reload much more slowly. (and if you look at any video of a killer doing a mass shooting, they are for the most part calm and collected as they are the ones causing the chaos)

Limiting the magazine capacity will only shift power in the favor of a criminal causing chaos

(if you have never fired a semi auto rifle or hand gun, I recommend you exercise your second amendment right and go to a firing range. I bet in a few hours of practicing, you will be able to shoot multiple rounds and cut your reload times to to about 1 second (especially if you have the extra ammo ready at your hip)

Now if you were being shot at, you would not be able to reload that fast (unless you went through some intense and extended military training), but just remember, what reduces your performance is the fear, adrenalin, and the various other right/ flight responses. A person on a killing rampage is not having that especially if they know that his or her targets are not armed and able to fight back. The last thing you want to worry about when being attacked is reloading, especially when dealing with multiple criminals.

For a law to be effective, it has to be able to reduce a criminals ability to to harm others while not weakening the ability of a law abiding citizen to protect them self. If you ban certain magazine sizes, it does not change the fact that there are mullions of large magazines already in circulation. and guess who will give those up and who wont if a law is passed.

In the countries where the laws were passed that are being proposed in the US, the criminals became more powerful relative to the law abiding people

these laws have been passed in other parts of the world and they have never made people safer, they have only make everyone less safe
