Virtual machine performance loss?

Hi, I have been debating for a while now whether or not to switch over to ubuntu for my main os and run windows virtually with virtual box. The only thing is that I do a lot of gaming and I don't the greatest hardware so I was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a severe performance lose between a native OS and the virtual OS as far as performance. Also recommendations on whether or not to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to whoever replies.

Yes, there will be a severe performance loss trying to run games in a VM. Use Windows as the host system and Ubuntu as the guest in a VM.
