Viruses, wifis and wireds

So.. here's what happened. My building had a wifi setup for the lobby, password enabled. Then it suddenly went away and we found a letter in the elevator stating that someone in the lobby infected the main office computer with a virus over the wifi. Something about that just stinks of BS to me. Unless the laptop in question was given access through the main office computer's firewall, then this shouldn't really be possible, right?

Sure it's possible.
What was the 'main office' firewall?
How well was it maintained?
Who had access? The owners son who downloaded a torrented game?

If some of the largest companies on the planet (Target, Home Depot), and some of the most secure websites can get 'hacked' or have a virus injected...I'm quite sure your apt complex system can be compromised.

And their use of the word 'virus' may simply be the proclamation of someone who does not know the difference.
Whatever "IT guy" they called in may be 1. also clueless, or 2. just telling them something to make them shut up while he fixes it.

Their system had an issue. May or may not be a 'virus'. But being infected with a virus is not out of the question.
