VM Bootable o/s

Hey guys I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but basically I was curious if there was a vm software out there that runs as a sole operating system. I'll give you an example. I use vmware at a daily basis for my workstation. I would have to sign into windows to of course use vmware. I was wondering if there was a vm software out there that is a operating system where I can just login and right from there have multiple environments. Pretty much cutting out the middle man. If not it's no big deal I was just curious whether it existed, so I can try it out.
