Volume Problems on Gateway Computer

I have a problem with the volume on my Gateway laptop. I just had it cleaned up and "healed" from a pretty bad virus...perhaps viruses...plus its a bit old and needed some work. After it was fixed the volume was working fine again. Now it doesn't seem to want to work. If I click in the volume icon and try to raise the bar, it immediately begins to fall back down. Allowing sound only when the bar is at the top...before it begins to fall again. It is not muted and I have troubleshooted everything possible to only have the same message, "This device is working properly"--very frustrating. The computer is working fine otherwise....except for this sound issue. I have researched several websites and blogs with no fix in site. Please...any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may still have viruses, and the best solution may be to save your files to a backup, reformat the drive (slow complete reformat) and reload a fresh OS.

Double click the speaker icon in the lower right hand of the desktop, this will bring up the mixer, or single click to bring up the volume control.
But in case the volume is missing, corrupted, or the audio is otherwise non-functional:
you check whichever audio was installed:
click start, control panel, add remove programs, look at the list...
which audio software is shown on the list? delete it, restart the computer.

now visit the motherboard manufacturer or computer manufacturer's website
look up your computer drivers by model number
download the latest audio drivers, save on the desktop...
turn the antivirus off,
if you have multiple security programs installed, turn them all off
(your driver may not install if security systems are turned on)
now load your new audio driver, restart, turn the antivirus back on.
