the 5730 is more powerfull than the 425m even the 5650 is more powerfull than the 425m. difference between them will be a good 10fps difference. usually when the 425m is put in a laptop it usually has optimus so if battery life is what you want i say go for the optimus. The acer 4820tg can be found in microcenter for $700 comes with the i5-460m and 5650. its literally in the middle of both for $700 the refreshed one comes with i5-480m and 6550 (refreshed card) for $800 its a 14inch dont know if you mind.

Lol, no. The refurb goes for $870-$949. I think getting it brand new, not refurbed, goes for around your $1100 mark at the lowest. Which is a price you might be able to pull off since it's February and all the new GPU cards and chipsets are out. With all the new cards and chips out I don't see why you wouldn't be able to find a Non-Sandy Bridge laptop with a killer card for a good price. Even with the delay due to the needed SB fix, vendors should be trying to clear backstock soon.

I would also try to find a website that hunts for deals. Like slickdeals.net, the members there try to find the cheapest and best deal on anything from diapers to laptops. They're very critical about the quality of a deal, so laptop deals get especially scrutinized. Admittedly, seeing gaming laptop deals is a rarity, but they did just have a deal up for a Sager. (Just an example, I know you don't have access to Sager.) The members at that site routinely find the $500 discount coupon codes for HP, Dell and Lenovo also.

So the best advice I can give is be patient if you have the time and do your research. It's that time of year when crazy deals pop up at weird times.

yup honestly if its gonna be a desktop replacement i say wait for sandybridge to be fix you should see them in the market again by april (at least for the sager mid np81x0 by early/mid april will ship and late april for the 15inches). Just because the sandybridge mobile are actually closer to desktop performance. the i5 use ddr3 1066mhz while the new sb will use 1333mhz. Sandybridge in laptops i think are a better upgrade than i7 desktops. I say if you can wait, then the wait will be worth it. If you cant, buy the current ones they are still really good.

But there are a few questions that come to mind...
1. will the sandybridge laptops cost significantly higher than the ones available now?
for example, will the lenovo y560p(sandybridge that is), cost significantly more than the current lenovo y560???

2. does going for an i7 processor mean better gaming performance?? or will an i5 suffice??

games arent multi core/threaded yet. as of now the most cores it uses is 2 core but there are a few games are multi core bfbc2 is one is them but doesnt use all 4 cores to the max. just use like 30-50% each core. sandybridge you'll probably see a good $100-$200 idk the pricing yet. but the acer 4820tg is $700-800 while the 4830tg rumors says its gonna be around $900-1000. this of course is with the quad core i7. i5 will be cheaper from range to 25-125 lower than the quad. We have to wait and find out.
