Wanted, Bare-Bones 600X Thinkpad

I am shopping for a 600X Thinkpad for a friend of mine, but he has a very
tight budget. Basically, what I am looking for is a bare bones 600X (450 MHz
minimum) with only a CD-Rom, floppy drive (don't even need the floopy caddy)
and power supply as extras. No added RAM, operating system or software
required. My budget is US$235.00 *including* shipping (to Canada). If you
have something that fits this description you can reply direct to me. I
would be willing to order and pay for it today (using PayPal).

Look on eBay for sellers "ThinkpadSales", "Tpads-plus" or "jbinmn", write them
and tell them what you are looking for, one of them should be able to help you.

btw, did you know the 600X can take up to a 850MHz PIII cpu? Also load it up to
576MB RAM using PC100 ram ONLY. Do not use so-called PC100/133 RAM, it wont
work.

Ya, I had heard that it could take up to 800 something MHz, and I know it
could take 576 MB of RAM. That's part of the reason I am trying to get my
friend a 600X. The other reason is the reputation of IBM thinkpads for
quality in particular the 600 series. He doesn't have a lot of money so I
think this machine would be good value for his dollar. I am planning to buy
a 600X PII-650 for myself. I could afford a lot newer machine, but I have no
need for the extra processing power. Plus the 600 series is a classic so I
just want one. Actually I already have a 600E. But I want the top end
machine in the 600 series.

If you, or anyone else with a 600X, are interested, I have two 700MHz PIII cpu's
that I took out of my 600x's that are now just collecting dust.. $45/each, plus
$5 Priority Mail(in the US) or $90 for the two, shipping included.

Does the 600x support speedstep ? AFAIK machines that don't will dumb
down a MMC2 module to its lower speed (as well as possibly chuck up a
BIOS error message) ...

Know what you mean. I got a 600X for the same reason pretty much (as
well as the fact that I was offered one ex-corporate _very_ cheaply <g>).

There are one or two irritating things about the design/ergonomics, but
it _is_ a very nice machine.

Yep, runs speedstep fine... I use CPUz http/www.cpuid.com to see the cpu
speed and it lists the correct speed when on Ac or battery.

Did the model/s originally have the 450 or 500MHz module installed
or were they originally the 600MHz SpeedStep models? Thanks.

They were 500Mhz models, -4AU and -4EU. I started off with the 700mhz cpu
upgrades (those are the ones I'm selling) then found two 800mhz cpu's. If I had
found 850's I would've used those. I d/l'ed and installed the SpeedStep file
and it runs consistantly(as long as its plugged in) at 800mhz.. On battery it
falls down to 650, still faster than 500. But they run just fine, no problems
with cooling either. Between the 800mhz speed and 576mb RAM, they really
scream.
