Warning about hp dv6z se

Hello all. I recently purchased an HP dv6z se via the hp website. It arrived yesterday. I selected for the radeon 5650 to be installed. My reciepts and the invoice that came with the pc reflect that selection. However, I checked what the card is via dxdiag and the catalyst control center. Both of these show that the installed gpu is a radeon 4250. I am in the process of returning the laptop to get the correct one. I think its odd that the card is a 4250. In the select editions for the dv6 only the 5470 and 5650 cards are available. The 4250 is the standard card for the dv6z (not select edition). I thought maybe they had sent me a standard dv6z but the one I recieved has a finger reader(as I had originally selected) but that feature is not available on the standard dv6z. Additionally, I had selected for a recovery disk to be included with the laptop. I didn't recieve any disks.

My advice if you buy one of these:
check all of the components
check for any software you may have ordered
(I think you only have 21 days to do a return)

My question is how can I check that the battery I selected is the one recieved(it is "high capacity" 6 cell not standard 6 cell)? How can I check if my wireless adapter is dual band(I don't have a 5ghz router)?

It sounds as if they simply shipped out the wrong order. Never the less, your points are well taken, as with any customizable laptop, it is always a good idea to ensure that you get what you selected component wise. Hopefully, the issue is resolved accordingly.

Makes you think. How many people get the wrong thing and just don't know about it?

Also, i don't get why a recovery disk is an 'option'??
I recently got my wife an HP too (terrible laptop btw), and it didn't come with any W7 or recovery disk or even drivers. I got it at a retail store, there was no mention it did not contain such disks and no attempt to sell me one.

but just to clarify

the Op doesn't have the Wrong Laptop

AMD N930 has an Integrated GPU of 4250

so currently your Laptop is on the Integrated GPU, that is why it is showing that

just go to the CCC and switch to Performance Mode a.k.a going to the Dedicated 5650

and there you go, your Laptop will now show you have the 5650

but just to clarify

the Op doesn't have the Wrong Laptop

AMD N930 has an Integrated GPU of 4250

so currently your Laptop is on the Integrated GPU, that is why it is showing that

just go to the CCC and switch to Performance Mode a.k.a going to the Dedicated 5650

and there you go, your Laptop will now show you have the 5650

I considered this as being the problem. I don't recall seeing the option to switch modes though, then again, I wasn't too thorough in checking. I noticed a switching mechanism occur when the laptop was plugged in. I don't think it was switching from 4250 to 5650 though. The performance was no where near what I had expected or what others were reporting. I don't know if the switch was an increase in clock for the 4250 or something else switching to the 4250(although this seems unlikely) but I don't think it was switching to 5650.

I will know in a couple days if I overlooked something as I will be recieving a new one.

To all those who care, returning it wasn't too hard. I had to talk to 7 different people first but eventually it worked out. The dissapointing thing is that they charged me $90 collateral since what I was sending back was worth less than what I would be recieving, or that's what they implied maybe. Anyway, the $90 was supposed to be returned to me when they recieved the faulty laptop or sent out the new one. I don't rememeber which but both have occurred and I still haven't gotten the money back so that sucks.


Additionally, I didn't see any indication of a 5650 being present in the computer but when I get the new one I will leave no stone un-turned in determining if its there or not. Hopefully it will be obvious though. I don't think I made a terrible mistake but I'm not going to rule it out yet.

hmm, there is a little chance that your laptop wasn't installed with the 5650, unless HP really did make a mistake, but it's unlikely

and im also not sure plugging the laptop will switch the graphics, it is done manually through CCC, i never use dxdiag, but i'd recommend you to check your specs through CPU-Z in the future just to be sure

anyway, will be looking forward to hear from you when you receive your new replacement, and hopefully it's the right one!

i own a dv6z-se too, and loving it!

too bad i dont live in US, so returning it will be a troublesome and not as easy as you folks in US =(

I had the laptop sent to my parents house since I'm moving soon and I didn't know when it would arrive. Anyway, it arrived on Tuesday and my mom is sending it on Thursday so I'll have it in a couple of days. I had her boot it up and perform the same check I did (dxidag). She said it says 5650. TweFoju, does yours have the 5650 in it? If so, could you check if the 4250 shows up when the pc is not on AC power and the 5650 when plugged in (under default hp power settings)? I think I checked the first one when it was plugged in but I could be wrong.

yes you are right, for some reason, when i plug the AC power, it automatically switches to the Performance mode, thus it's 5650, funny i never really pay attention to it,

all this time i always thought that it need manual switch through CCC. because i haven't really switching it as i haven't play any games yet that needed the switch, the only time i did the switching through the CCC was when i 1st get the laptop to make sure it can switch

anyway, you can change the options in the power advance settings to not switching automatically upon plugging it on power

anyway, cool that you got your replacement back!

I suppose I'll never know if I checked dxdiag when the computer was plugged in but I do know that when I tried playing BF2 on the first one it had terrible performance and it was plugged in. This one runs everything maxed at about 60 fps so much better performance. It also came with the recovery disks that I requested this time. TweFoju, do you know if the F keys can be changed so that, for example, F10 is default instead of increasing volume?

so reconspartan, can you change the graphics from the on board to the 5650 through ccc? or you still change it when you change profile to performance?

Hey how did u get your laptop? I have tried the US HP site and they refuse to ship to Australia, so I called HP over here and they just said they don't offer that model here.

To change the primary controls of the function "F" keys, go into the BIOS settings and under system config there is an option that says "action keys" and in that option you toggle action keys as primary or the function keys as primary.
