Get a cheap pair of speakers thats unshielded on the inside, plug them in and turn up the volume. They will pulse and make noises when cell phones transfer data, yell at the class whenever they go off :) Problem solved.

[citation][nom]tomtompiper[/nom]Children should not have phones with anything but a one line alphanumeric display. If their parents let them have more, shame on them. They are leaving their children open to porn, cyber bullying and a host of other evils including cheating in exams.[/citation]
Um, Tom, there hasn't been a phone made in the last 5 years that has a one line display. Where do you propose getting this antique?

I'm shocked at all the people writing that if school was more interesting, then they wouldn't cheat. Get over yourselves! People cheat because they're looking for shortcuts. Either they're too lazy to put in the work or stupid. If the work is too hard, get some help after class from the teacher or a tutor. In the end, you're only handicapping your future. Have fun pumping my gas.

[citation][nom]Shadow703793[/nom]If one really wanted to cheat on an Calculus,Algebra, etc where calculators are permited it's quite a trivial matter to put notes/formulas on a TI83/84 calculators. Even though teachers clear the "RAM" they DON'T clear the "Archives"! Those that have a TI 83,etc know what I'm talking about.[/citation]

Your professor isn't worth a damn if he/she allows any sort of graphing calculator during examinations or quizzes. Scientific calculators only.

Illegal. If you were allowed to scramble communications at will movie theaters would have done this a long time ago. They can't because it's illegal.

In the real world you have books, internet, people at your disposal. I think that "tests" in school are useless. What counts in the real world is that you know where to find the information, not what you can remember.

You're wrong. No employer wants to wait around for you to finish your work while you search for information on the Internet, nor do they want you pestering your coworkers for answers. They expect you to know everything you need to know to do your job.

Everything is perfect. Oh, by the way... what's 5+2? I just couldn't find that on the internet."

Darned I was thinking the same thing! But it wouldn't be practical to implement. Simple solution is to have everyone empty their pockets before entering the exam hall. Any phones smuggled past that would be have to be hidden in a rather painful place, if you know what I mean...

Who said anything about searching? Ever gone to the doctor? Do they know everything? No. Do they know where to find the information? Yes. Its one thing to Google search for something. It's another thing to have the resource you need at your finger tip.

What is important is that you UNDERSTAND the information, not that you remember it. Many tests I have taken at the college level where basically "remember these few things and pass" Then forget all about it the next day. Few professors knew that people need to understand the information, and gave you all the answers. If you didn't understand the information, you failed even with all the answers spelled out to you.

Hear hear!

Employers don't care as much about your ability to remember compared to your ability to learn and adapt. This is why school is so out of date. Kids know that too; why do you think they put no effort in otherwise?

That and they are looking at their parents who are trapped in a hole giving them the same advice that got them there! Go to school, get good grades, get a good job? Doesn't work anymore. Even if you do get a good job, chances are you will be working for a college dropout (i.e. Microsoft).

when i was in middle and high school, if i knew that someone was copying off of me on tests, i would purposely put down the wrong answers, then right before you hand in the tests, i would erase everything and put down the right answers.

Would you trust a doctor on emergency ward, who has to refer to wikipedia every time you sneeze?

No, thank you.

[citation][nom]megamanx00[/nom]Here's a thought, how about teaching them? If the students individual needs are addressed they will be less motivated to cheat in order to pass. Technique should be addressed before simply throwing money at the problem. It doesn't matter the detection equipment, if there is a will there is a way.[/citation]

This approach won't work! All you can do is offer knowledge, you can't force the pupils to pay attention. And everybody knows it's easier to cheat than to read. I work at a collage like place with some 450 employees and a vast amount of students. No way you can motivate them all to actually do their job - students don't nessecarily understand the way it works, they fail to realize that it's their responsibility to actually learn something, and that in the end failing to do so results in their unemployment, and not the educational institution going out of business or otherwise suffer from their inclination to blame everybody else for their failures.

lets see...traditional methods always work if you can pull it off like a pro. Peel off the label of a soda bottle and stick a cheat sheet to the inside of label put it back on and drink until you find the answer you need. Or take apart a pen and create a small scroll you can twist in and out of the pen that you r using. Its not technology vs. technology, it is pure creativeness (if you want to cheat) vs. not letting test takers have anything in there possesion when taking a test. BUT the pen idea will work if you dont get caught. Which leads to the testers being completely monitored at all times. Wow i got this from both ends. Everyone is a noob when it comes to this shit

I don't know what doctors you go to, but the ones I go don't have google open during a consult to look up possible diagnosis for every symptom I give them.

@LuckyRed - Any competent manager knows that you will not know everything and in any normal job atmosphere, you will have the ability to research problems. Unless you're giving a deposition at a pre-trial, you will almost always be able to research a problem/question.

As someone who graduated from college semi-recently, I can say that the article pretty accurately portrays how things are right now. I programmed information into my graphing calculator for any exam where they were permitted. I knew of many students who would take off the label of their water bottles, write answers on the inside of it and tape it back on.

Really though, cheating will probably always exist. It has nothing to do with the quality of the professor or the intelligence of the student. As someone who graduated with honors from a respected university, I can say I cheated a few times on tests that I could as easily not cheated on. I usually wrote down reminders for double checking my answers on tests. I don’t think I ever relied solely on cheating for an exam grade.
