What are Hangouts?

I'm trying to free space on my Moto G. I don't know what Hangouts are. Are they crucial? Can they be deleted/uninstalled?

Hangouts is just a chat/phone app from google. It doesn't effect your regular calls, texts, etc. It isn't necessary.
