What do I need in order to create a home system with these speakers?

I am looking to install a home theater speaker system with some of the speakers available at Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=109&cp_id=10837).

In addition to the speakers, what hardware is necessary to drive the system? My intention is to build either a 5.1 or 7.1 system with speakers from the site.

Other questions: What is the best combination of 2-way vs. 3-way speakers? Can a passive subwoofer be powered by the same receiver as the rest of the system or does it require its own amplifier?

Thanks in advance, sorry if this is unclear, I know very little about audio systems.

You will need a surround sound receiver. Spend as much as you can on the front three speakers and sub. They rears can be less expensive. The sub has to be self powered as no surround receivers have sub amps built in.
