That's correct, 95% of what an iPhone can do is based on having an internet connection. It's like buying a car in a country with one gas station and no roads. Basically you bought a couch with a roof and doors. Having an iPhone in a place where you can just use it to make calls is the same.

You can use it to play music and videos you copy to it manually, but then you need to get those files from somewhere and use a computer to connect to in order to copy the files over.
