What do you think of smart homes?

I am currently studying for college the topic of Smart Homes. I would like some people's opinions on this topic please.

When it works it great.
When it screws up it's a nightmare.
Nothing more frustrating than stuff that only works sometimes.
There is also a matter of security since a smart home could be hacked.

It's a great topic to be studying. In my opinion whether you're an early adopter or currently sitting on the fence, within the next decade or so smart home technology will be all around you.
