what is the best HP or Acer 17" just for general stuff I serf sports, news and politics, Facebook.,
look up things, and use word now and then.

Do you have a couple specific models you are looking at? If you are shopping for a laptop for general use you are going to want a decent processor. I would see if you can find a good deal with a laptop that has an Intel i3 or i5 processor. If it were between an Acer and an HP with the same specs I would personally go with the HP only because I have had better luck making warranty claims through them.
